Known for its rich flavor, twisted
downy shoots and multiple health benefits the tea leaves range from dark
chestnut-brown to green chestnut. The uniqueness and the flavor that the
Darjeeling black tea gets is because it’s grown high up in the Himalayas. The
tea gardens are located at an altitude of 400 to 2000 meters and plenty of
rainfall and loamy soil creates the perfect condition for the growth of this
tea. Darjeeling black tea is not
fully oxidized unlike other black tea and is similar to an oolong tea.
Darjeeling tea gets its flavor and colour
because of the way it is harvested. It is mostly harvested five times in a
year. Each of the harvest is generally known as flush with different
characteristics. All of these flushes in a year tend to give the Darjeeling
black tea the flavor and color that is unmatchable. Let’s look at when each of
the flush is carried out:
1st Flush:
This is generally carried out in between February and April month. This flush
comprises of young shoots that are green to brown in colour. This first flush
is less oxidized than other flushes.
In-between flush:
It is a rare harvest that is carried out in the first week of May month. This
is done to blend the greenness of the first flush and the roundness of the
second.
2nd flush: This flush is carried out from mid May to June before the
rainy season. The tea leaves produced from this are dark brown and have a
pretty strong flavor.
3rd flush: It takes place between July and
September month. This flush is mostly done under heavy rain and the leaves grow
faster and are less withered than other flushes.
4th flush: This flush is done from October to mid November after the
rainy season. This fourth flush is the last harvest before the tea plants go
